Ever wondered why what motivates you doesn’t motivate others? How do you find out what motivates others? For answers to these questions, read on.
The reason why what motivates you doesn’t motivate others is because we have different backgrounds and even follow different cultures. We have been exposed to different life circumstances and challenges. That is why our likings and tastes are different.
But is there a way to find out what motivates others? The answer is yes. Just ask the following questions to the person you are interested in. His/her answers will help you to determine along which lines their level of motivation soars high.
- What do you spend most of your time thinking about?
S/he may answer that s/he dreams of travel and touring around the world. Only if s/he had the money, it would have been possible for her to do so. Therefore, their answer tells you that they would like to explore the world but they are short of money. Touring the world and knowing different cultures motivates them.
- What do you like to do as a hobby?
The answer to this question will be focused on what she likes to do as a hobby for the present. S/he is already doing it and that motivates them. This is unlike the above question, which focuses on future aspirations.
The person may answer that she likes collecting coins of different countries around the world. It has been her obsession since her childhood. She asks you which country you are from and if you can provide her the coins of your nation. So, even if your own infatuation may be reading fictions, her motivation is centered around a totally different area.
- What are some of the favorite things you like to do when you are sad?
This is really a good question. The person’s answer whom you address this may help you to follow the favorite things he loves to do in moments of sorrow. You really could pick up some tips.
For instance, he may reply he is really fond of music although actually he is an engineer. When things are not very well, he likes to download tabs from the web, make music and play on his guitar. Otherwise he loves to walk in the chilly fresh air outside and also to journal his thoughts to feel better.
So all the above activities raise his level of motivation when the going gets tough. You could pick up some of his ideas and apply directly to your life to get back the mojo of life.
- What turns you on at the home or work front?
He may answer that watching a comedy movie together with his family or sharing funny anecdotes that happened during the day with his family and having an amusing laugh together really makes him feel good.
At the work front, treating his colleagues and paying the bill during lunch break at the food lounge really turns him on. He loves to know his colleagues better and have a fun chitchat together.
Summing up, the above four questions addressed to anyone and the answers they come up with will help you to realize the other party’s line of interests and sources of motivation. Likewise you yourself could answer the questions in your journal and share with others for mutual benefits. Both you and the other party get to understand each other and start following a common thread in respect of raising your motivation levels, compromising each other for the sake of friendship or bonding.
